Rivian ambassador and adventure photographer Ben Moon now has 1,300 miles on the prototype camper we installed on his R1T last month. He reports that, versus a naked truck, the GFC reduces range by approximately 10 percent.
And while that number is already twice as good as the Yakima rooftop tent and bed rack that Rivian sells as an official accessory, it’s not good enough for us. So, we’re making some changes.
We hired some heavily talented actors at great expense to play GFC engineers, and explain what makes the Rivian a unique challenge in this video.
The TL;DR there is that the R1T’s bed rails dictate a unique mounting approach, the complex shapes around the rear of the cab, plus the prominent mission-critical shark fin antenna need to be accounted for in order to position the camper as flush to the truck as possible, and the buttons that operate the Rivian’s gear tunnel doors, tonneau cover, and tailgate are being incorporated into the design with utter seamlessness.
And, while solving those problems, we also realized that they represent an opportunity to make the least intrusive, most practical, highest range camper that will ever be designed for this vehicle. In doing that, we think we’re opening up an entire new possibility: adventurous off-road travel that takes full advantage of all the solutions electric vehicles make possible. But more on that soon.
Because we’re taking advantage of this opportunity to make the GFC Platform Camper for the Rivian R1T so special, we are announcing that delivery timelines are being pushed back six weeks. (We’re doing everything possible to shorten that timeline.) We do not anticipate that this will impact pricing.

Stay tuned for more updates as we make progress.
